Frequently asked questions
How do I create a synthesis matrix?
Put your sources in the rows and your comparison dimensions in the columns — typically research question, method, sample, key findings, and limitations. Fill each cell with a short note from the paper, then read down the columns to spot agreements, contradictions, and gaps. This tool automates the first pass: search papers, select 10–20, and it drafts the matrix for you to edit.
Where do the papers come from?
From OpenAlex, the open index of over 250 million scholarly works. Every matrix row links to its source (DOI when available). The tool never invents references.
Will the AI make things up?
The AI only reads the abstracts of papers you selected, and each cell is grounded in that text. When an abstract is missing, the row is explicitly flagged as title-only. That said, abstracts compress a paper — always verify cells against the full text before you cite anything. Every output carries this reminder.
Can I use this for my assignment or thesis?
Use it the way you would use a librarian: to organize your reading, not to replace it. A synthesis matrix is pre-writing scaffolding — the writing must be yours. Check your institution’s policy on AI assistance and disclose it if required.
How do I find the research gap?
Empty spaces in a synthesis matrix are diagnostic: if a theme row has few papers, or every study shares the same limitation, that is where literature is missing. The tool lists candidate gaps explicitly — treat them as hypotheses to verify, and search each one before claiming it in your review.
What is the difference between a synthesis matrix and a literature review table?
They are the same artifact under different names — synthesis matrix, literature review matrix, literature review table, or source matrix. University writing centers use the terms interchangeably.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
Free, no account. Generation is rate-limited to keep it free for everyone. Export to Markdown or CSV (opens in Excel and Google Sheets) and continue editing anywhere.
