Research gap finder

A research gap is not “nobody has studied X” — it is a specific question the existing literature raises but does not answer. The most reliable way to find one is not brainstorming; it is building a synthesis matrix and reading the empty spaces.

The matrix method for finding gaps

When you lay 10–20 papers side by side across research questions, methods, samples, and findings, gaps surface in four repeatable patterns:

  • Population gaps

    Every study samples the same group (e.g., university students) — nobody has tested the finding on the population you care about.

  • Method gaps

    A column full of cross-sectional surveys means no one has run the longitudinal or experimental version of the question.

  • Contradiction gaps

    Two credible papers disagree and no third study explains why — resolving the contradiction is a contribution.

  • Context gaps

    Findings hold in one setting (US hospitals, primary schools) and have never been tested in another.

Real examples of identified gaps

Treat any AI-suggested gap as a hypothesis: search it before you claim it in your review.
